Box Score 2 Monmouth put on the hits, 15 to be exact, and freshman
Rebecca Gallis ripped two homers, driving in five runs but the Scots came up a single run short in each game of a twinbill in Bloomington.
The Scots led in each game of the doubleheader before falling 7-6 in Game 1 and 5-4 in Game 2. The Titans touched starter
Liz Hippen for two unearned runs in the first inning of the opener before the junior shut down the threat. Monmouth got one run back in the fourth on
Justine Bodenhamer's RBI double and then took the lead in the fifth when Gallis stroked a three-run roundtripper. IWU got two runs back in the bottom of the frame off reliever
Brianna Perschall. Perschall had an answer of her own in the top of the sixth, slamming a two-run shot for a 6-4 lead.
The Titans pushed the tying runs across in the bottom of the sixth and set up seventh inning dramatics. Monmouth threatened early, putting their first two on, but left them stranded via a groundout and a pair of strikeouts. IWU ended the game as it began, scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to saddle Perschall with the hard-luck loss.
The hits kept coming in the nightcap as Illinois Wesleyan jumped out to a 3-0 lead. The Scots put all of their runs in one inning as Gallis hit her second homer of the game in the third, plating two after
Gianna Drager's double scored Bodenhamer and
Maggie Hayes lofted a sac fly to score
Lauren Sperry. IWU pulled the game out by scoring solo runs in the fourth and fifth while limiting the Scots to just two hits and three base runners after the third inning.
Monmouth opens Midwest Conference play next Wednesday with a home twinbill against rival Knox at 3 p.m.
