Box Score 2 Monmouth's bats warmed up, but the Scots couldn't overcome cold gloves Sunday afternoon when Washington University swept Monmouth on the Scots home opener 7-1, 11-7.

The Bears touched the Scot for six runs, just two earned in the opener before Rebecca Gallis' single plated Elena Sakellaropoulos with Monmouth's lone run in the bottom of the fifth. Wash U took advantage of three Monmouth errors to offset a six strikeout performance by Monmouth starter Liz Hippen.

The Scots' spotted the Bears four unearned runs in the first inning of the late game, but Monmouth made a game of it with a four-run fifth. Justine Bodenhamer led off the Scots' half of the frame with a base hit and eventually scored on Laura Dulee's base knock as the Scots batted around. Trailing 11-5 in the bottom of the ninth, a double from Chelsea Lee and a base hit from Kirsti Barton drove in solo runs before the Bears ended the threat despite 12 Monmouth hits.

Monmouth continues their home stand with a 3 p.m. double header Friday afternoon against Greenville.
