Monmouth led most of the way as the Fighting Scots' men's water polo team wrapped up their season with a win at the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference season-ending tournament.
Playing in the seventh-place game Sunday morning in Erie, Pa.,
Jake Hall gave the Scots both of their leads in a 14-12 win over Washington and Jefferson. Hall's first of three goals in the game staked the Scots to 1-0 first quarter lead on W and J. The Presidents answered with three straight goals in the period and maintained the lead until Monmouth's two-goal outburst by
Kurt Holzer and
Julius Bradsfield in the final 90 seconds of the first period knotted the game at 3-3. Hall's second goal midway through the second quarter broke the tie and gave the Scots the lead for good.
Monmouth kept the heat on and opened up a five-goal lead in the third quarter and held off the Presidents' potential veto of the Scots' victory when they rallied with a pair of goals in the final 75 seconds of the game. The Scots picked up an insurance goal by Bradsfield with 10 seconds left after the Presidents had pulled to within one at 13-12 with 50 seconds left. The Scots improved to 2-1 over Washington and Jefferson this season as they avenged a seven-goal loss to W and J at last month's CWPA Division III Championships.
The Scots were put in Sunday's seventh-place contest after dropping the tournament opener to Mercyhurst 19-5 on Saturday and then falling to McKendree 18-10 in their second round contest. Mercyhurst – the tournament runner up – jumped out to a 9-2 first quarter lead to send the Scots into the loser's bracket contest with McKendree. McKendree eased away from the Scots, stretching their two-goal first quarter margin to five midway through the third period and then held off the Scots in the final frame.
Three Scots tied for scoring honors over the weekend as Hall, Bradsfield and
Alex Altamirano pumped in five goals each while Holzer added four. Only Bradsfield – one of two seniors on the squad – will be lost to graduation next fall.
