Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Monmouth will have to wait until Monday to learn if they'll make their first NCAA Tournament appearance after Lake Forest earned the Midwest Conference's automatic NCAA berth with a 5-0, 6-2 win over the Scots in Saturday's championship round.
Â
Selections for the NCAA Tournament, including at-large bids, will be announced Monday at noon Central Time as the Scots will learn the postseason fate.
Â
A day after
Liz Hippen no-hit Lake Forest, the Foresters touched Hippen for a solo run in the third inning for all the runs they would need in the Game 1 win Saturday afternoon. The Scots threatened in the fifth, loading the bases with two outs before the Foresters escaped the jam. Lake Forest then added insurance runs with a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame and tacked on two more in the sixth.
Â
The Scots struck first in the late game to give starter
Kaylee Kurtz an early 1-0 lead.
Charlotte Park opened the second with a base hit, and following a sac bunt by
Johnna Schultz to move pinch runner
Carolyn Scherpe to second who scored the game's first run on
Emily Siefken's double. The Foresters scratched out a run in the third to knot the game and plated an unearned run in the next inning to take the lead for good.
Â
Trailing 3-1 in the sixth, Kristyn Ozga gave Monmouth life with a one-out single and raced home on a double by
Emily Watkins, but that would be the last of the scoring as the Foresters held on for the win. Â
Â
Monmouth (28-12) set the program record for wins while appearing in the league championship game for the first time since 2003.
