Monmouth and Lake Forest locked horns and came away with a split in windy conditions Saturday in Monmouth. The Scots took Game 1 5-3 before the Foresters rallied for a 7-3 Game 2 win.
Â
With the wind blowing in,
Michaela Guthrie launched a grand slam over the right centerfield fence to give the Scots a 5-1 lead in the opener and all the runs
Liz Hippen would need in a big fourth inning. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, the Scots loaded the bases and with one out, Guthrie drilled her second homerun of the season.
Â
Lake Forest countered with two runs on three hits in the sixth to cut the Monmouth lead to 4-3. Hippen helped herself in the bottom of the inning, driving in
Johnna Schultz with an insurance run for a 5-3 edge. Hippen then got out of a two-on, one-out jam in the seventh, inducing a game-ending double play. Hippen fanned seven and scattered five hits to earn her fourth win.
Â
Monmouth jumped on Lake Forest in Game 2 with three runs in the second inning when
Kirstyn Ozga supplied a two-run base hit with two outs. Lake Forest got one run back in the third on three consecutive hits before starter
Brianna Perschall stopped the bleeding.
Â
The Foresters then rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the sixth, taking advantage of a leadoff error and pounded a pair of doubles to take a 5-3 lead. Lake Forest added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh and held on for the win.
