Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Monmouth moved to the top of the Midwest Conference standings with a 4-2, 4-3 sweep of Illinois College Tuesday to end the Scots' 12-game conference homestand.
Â
Liz Hippen fanned nine and went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and one RBI to help the Scots take Game 1. The Lady Blues scored solo runs in the first two innings before the Scots pulled away. Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the second, Hippen drove in
Johnna Schultz from second base to knot the game at 2-2.
Michaela Guthrie then supplied what turned out to be the game-winner with a two-out, two-run double to give Monmouth a 4-2 lead. Hippen kept IC off the board the rest of the way and worked out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth en route to earning her team-high eighth win.
Â
The Scots used a pair of two-run innings and a solid effort in the circle from
Kaylee Kurtz in the nightcap to complete the sweep. The scenario remained the same in Game 2 as IC took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Monmouth answered in their half of the inning, scoring two-runs with two outs.
Charlotte Park's bloop single plated
Kirstyn Ozga and
Kirsti Barton to knot the game at 2-2. The Scots took the lead in the next inning when
Emily Siefken laced a double into left center, scoring pinch runner
Chelsea Lee. Siefken then came home on Ozga's base hit.
Â
Illinois College threatened in the seventh, putting their first two batters on before Hippen was summoned from the bullpen. The sophomore retired three straight to earn her fourth save, tying Megan Butler for the program's season save record, and giving Kurtz her fourth win of the season.
Â
With the sweep, Monmouth improved to 16-8 overall and 10-2 in the Midwest Conference.
