Box Score 2 Monmouth won their fourth straight in Florida with a pair of wins Wednesday to improve to 5-2, downing Mt. Ida College 5-3 to open the day's play and clipping Alvernia University 4-1 in the nightcap.
Â
The Scots used Tuesday's tried-and-true formula for the win over Mt. Ida. Solid pitching and late bats gave the Scots the victory. Monmouth gave starter
Kaylee Kurtz an early 2-0 lead when three straight first inning hits plated
Charlotte Park and
Johnna Schultz. Kurtz took it from there, keeping the Mustangs off the board and working out of a bases loaded jam in the third.
Â
The Mustangs came back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth before
Kaila Dunfee moved into the circle in relief of Kurtz. The freshman shut down the threat with the Scots trailing 3-2.
Â
Schultz promptly led off the sixth with a triple, her second extra base hit of the game, and scored on Angela Schaamburg's sac bunt to knot the game at 3-3. Kurtz, who had reached on an error, later scored on Mt. Ida's second error of the inning to put the Scots ahead 4-3.
Â
Liz Hippen got the call from the 'pen and worked the final two innings to earn her second save of the week, giving Dunfee her second win.
Â
No late-inning heroics were needed in the Scots' win over Alvernia. Hippen fanned seven in the complete-game win and got second inning support. Following a first inning run when
Michaela Guthrie singled and then scored on a passed ball, the Scots piled on three more unearned runs in the second. Guthrie's two-out single drove in Schaumburg for a 2-0 lead. Two Crusader errors followed, allowing two additional runs to score for all the runs the Scots would need.
