Box Score 2 Monmouth improved to 3-2 with two seventh-inning wins Tuesday in Clermont, Fla., flirting with a no-hitter in a 3-1 win over Emmanuel College in the day's opener and then scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh for an 8-7 win over Lancaster Bible College.
Â
The Scots banged out seven hits against Emmanuel, but found themselves down 1-0 entering the seventh when Emmanuel scored without the aid of a hit in the fourth via a walk, ground out and wild pitch.
Morgan Throop came off the bench in the top of the seventh and delivered a leadoff triple to set the stage for the late inning heroics. Throop later scored on a fielding error to knot the game at 1-1.
Kaila Dunfee followed suit with a pinch hit RBI single and later scored on Kristyn Ozga's double to give the Scots a 3-1 advantage.
Â
Entering the bottom of the seventh, the Scots were still entertaining thoughts of a no-hitter until Emmanuel broke up the no-hit bid, stroking their lone hit of the game with two outs. A walk ensued to bring the winning run to the plate before
Liz Hippen fanned the final batter for the win.
Â
Starting pitcher
Kaylee Kurtz and relievers
Kaila Dunfee and Hippen combined to toss a one-hitter while striking out eight and walking one.
Â
The Scots banged out a dozen hits in a thrilling win over Lancaster Bible, but it was small ball that won the game.
Â
Monmouth jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead, but saw the lead evaporate when the Chargers rallied for four runs on just one hit in the top of the sixth to take a 7-6 lead.
Â
The Scots got one run back in the bottom of the frame when
Michaela Guthrie singled and then scored on an Ozga base hit.
Â
Tied at 7-7 in the top of the seventh, Lancaster drew a leadoff walk and threatened to score on an extra base hit, but center fielder
Angela Schaumburg gunned the runner down at the plate. Kurtz then induced a fly to left to send the game to the bottom of the seventh where Schaumburg was the hero again.
Â
Three straight singles loaded the bases for Schaumburg who drove in
Johnna Schultz with the winning run on a suicide squeeze. The win was Monmouth's third one-run game this week.
