Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Monmouth took an early lead in the Midwest Conference race, sweeping Cornell in a Saturday twinbill 3-1, 8-2 at Monmouth.
Â
The Scots scratched out single runs in the first three innings of the opener to support
Liz Hippen who earned her third win. Monmouth took advantage in the first inning following a
Charlotte Park double and a
Michaela Guthrie single that moved Park to third. Guthrie promptly stole second and Park raced home with the first run on a Rams' throwing error. Hippen then helped herself in the second inning, opening the frame with a single before pinch runner
Chelsea Lee entered and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Guthrie added an insurance run in the third, driving in
Kirstyn Ozga for the final Monmouth run.
Â
Guthrie picked up three hits – one a solo homer – and three RBIS in the nightcap. Park opened Monmouth's scoring, ripping a two-run homer run in the first inning before Guthrie added a solo blast in the third.
Â
Trailing 3-1 in the fourth, Cornell closed the gap when Melissa Griffin homered to cut the margin to one before the Scots summoned
Brianna Perschall from the bullpen. The freshman got out of the inning when the Scots'
Emily Watkins gunned down the tying run at the plate.
Â
The Scots followed the defensive gem with a five-run fourth that included a two-run double off the bat of Guthrie and a run-scoring single from pinch hitter
Emily Siefken. Perschall took it from there, facing just two batters over the minimum the rest of the way to earn her first collegiate win.
