Box Score Monmouth's seventh-inning rally fell just short in their Florida get-away game, falling 2-1 to previously ranked Aurora.
Â
The Spartans touched starter
Kaylee Kurtz for one unearned run in the second, taking advantage of a one-out double and back-to-back Scots' errors to break the ice. Aurora threatened again in the third, loading the bases as Kurtz induced a fly out to end the inning. Aurora tacked on a needed insurance run in the fifth. Back-to-back singles off of reliever
Liz Hippen set the table for the Spartans who drove in the eventual winning run on a sacrifice fly.
Â
Monmouth, held to just one hit through the first six innings, rallied in the top of the seventh.
Morgan Throop began the Scots' comeback bid with a one-out single and moved into scoring position on a base hit by
Maggie Hayes. Pinch hitter
Kaila Dunfee followed with a run-scoring double, plating Throop to cut the margin to 2-1. The Scots then loaded the bases when
Kirstyn Ozga drew a two-out walk, but Monmouth's comeback fell short when Aurora induced a game-ending pop up.
Â
Kurtz suffered the loss after scattering three hits, walking two and striking out one in four innings of work.
Â
The Scots leave Florida at 5-3 and will open their home season on March 26 with Cornell College.
