Box Score 2 Monmouth fell victim to late-inning trouble in a 9-5, 4-3 twinbill loss to Millikin.
Â
Tied at 2-2 in the top of the fifth, the Big Blue plated three runs on three hits and a walk to open up a lead. A Millikin grand slam in the sixth then staked Mu to a 9-2 lead.
Â
The Scots banged out 14 hits in the game and came back in the sixth when
Michaela Guthrie opened the inning with a base hit and then came home when
Morgan Throop induced a bases-loaded walk. Monmouth still had hope in the  seventh when
Johnna Schultz and
Charlotte Park opened the inning with back-to-back hits. Schultz then raced home when Guthrie's shot to right was mishandled to cut the deficit to 9-4. A base hit by
Hanna Drowns then chased Park home with two outs, but the rally fell short when a fly out to left ended the inning.Â
Â
Liz Hippen fanned nine in the nightcap, but the Big Blue touched the freshman for a single run in the seventh to break a 3-3 tie. Millikin had taken a 2-1 lead in the third, turning three straight hits into a pair of runs. Another tally in the fifth made it 3-1.
Â
Monmouth countered in the bottom of the fifth when Schultz doubled and then scored on an error on Drowns' batted ball. The Scots then tied it in the sixth when pinch-runner
Kirstyn Ozga moved around the bases on a pair of passed balls and then scored on a wild pitch.
Â
Millikin took the lead for good in the seventh with two outs. A walk and base hit ensued to give the Big Blue their 4-3 lead. They held on for the win when the Scots were retired in order in the bottom of the inning.
Â
Schultz led the Scots going 5-for-8.
