Key hits missing in softball losses

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Monmouth got the hits, but not at the right time and dropped a pair of games Tuesday in Clermont, Fla.

Wheaton scratched out a pair of runs in the first three innings and made them stand up to hand the Scots a 4-1 loss.

Trailing 2-0 in the top of the sixth, the Scots put back-to-back hits together as Emily Watkins picked up her second hit of the game to led off the inning and Johnna Schultz tacked on another single. Liz Hippen then delivered a run-scoring hit to right with two outs to plate the lone tally.

The Scots jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead against SUNY Oneonta, but couldn't hang on in a 5-3 loss. Kirstyn Ozga and Watkins each reached in the first inning to give Monmouth the early edge, but Oneonta used a four-run fourth to take a 5-2 lead. Ozga got one of the runs back with a solo homer in the fifth, but the Scots could only manage three base runners over the next two innings.

Monmouth will next face Fontbonne for the second time this week Wednesday afternoon. The Griffins won the first meeting on Monday 4-2.
