For the third time in four tries this season, the Monmouth College men's water polo season ended their weekend with a win. The Scots finished fifth at the Division III Championships with a 14-6 win over Penn State-Behrend on Sunday.
Monmouth used balanced scoring and an explosive third quarter to post the win over the Lions.
Ian Salveson set the tone, scoring the first goal of the game at the 5:24 mark of the first period as Monmouth never trailed.
Trailing 5-4 at the start of the second half, Penn State-Behrend knotted the score, but the Scots countered with the offensive onslaught, scoring seven unanswered goals from seven different players. Monmouth defense also stepped up in the final half, allowing just two goals. Offensively, nine players scored for the Scots with no one scoring more than two goals in the balanced attack.
The finish to the weekend was a nice rebound for the Scots who got off to a slow start in Saturday's pool play at Connecticut College in New London, Conn. Monmouth opened pool play against the nation's No. 3 ranked team, Johns Hopkins, falling 18-4. The Blue Jays held the Scots to a scoreless first quarter and took a 7-0 lead on the way to the win over Monmouth. The Scots got off to a better start against host school Connecticut College. Monmouth spotted the Camels a 3-0 lead late in the first quarter, but came back with three second quarter goals – two by
Julius Bradsfield – to cut the deficit to 5-4 at the half. Conn College used a 5-0 run in the third period to gain a cushion and sent the Scots down to a 12-8 defeat.
The Scots will take another road trip the first weekend in November when they travel to Lewisburg, Pa., for the Southern Division Championships.
