Softball has repeat ending in twinbill loss to Big Blue

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Monmouth saw the bottom of the seventh bite them twice in a doubleheader loss to Millikin Sunday, dropping both ends of the twinbill by identical 3-2, 3-2 scores.

Alyssa Edler nearly matched her pitching performance from a day earlier, working the full seven innings in the opener. Sommer Foster's leadoff homer to open the 3rd inning gave the Scots a 1-0 lead. They added another tally in the fourth when Caitlin Lingle scored on a misplayed ball off the bat of Kristen Dillon.

Millikin answered with solo runs in the fourth and fifth, setting up a photo finish in the seventh. Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh, the Big Blue took Game 1 with run-scoring back-to-back doubles to spoil Edler's 6-hit, 7-strikeout performance.

Skyler Johnson rebounded from a tough outing Saturday, working into the sixth on Sunday. Johnson fought back after serving up a leadoff homer in the bottom of the 1st, retiring nine of the next 10 batters before handing the ball over to Taylor Smith with one out and two on in the sixth.

Millikin tied the game in the sixth after the Scots had pulled out to a 2-1 lead on Emily Watkins sac fly in the third.

The Big Blue again got the big hit in the bottom of the seventh. The two-out single plated the winning run to spoil the combined 3-hitter of Johnson and Smith.
