Softball splits with Rams thanks to pair of two-out rallies

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Monmouth put together a rally in the opener, but couldn't generate that same magic in the nightcap as the Scots split a Midwest Conference doubleheader with Cornell, taking Game 1 7-5, but dropping Game 2 6-3.

The Scots spotted the Rams five first inning runs before chipping away for the come-from-behind win. Alyssa Edler worked the full seven innings after coming in from the bullpen in the first, allowing a three-run homer before blanking Cornell for the final six frames.

After Monmouth scratched out a run in the third, Charlotte Park deposited the first pitch she saw in the fourth beyond the left field fence to begin the Monmouth rally. After the Rams retired the next two batters, Sommer Foster stroked a single and Kirstyn Ozga walked. RBI base hits then followed as Emily Watkins, Caitlin Lingle and Kaitlyn Winkler drove in runs as Monmouth batted around to tie the game at 5-5.

Another two-out rally in the fifth gave the Scots the lead when Maggie Hayes reached on an error and scored on Foster's double. Foster then scored an insurance run when Alyssa Deitz came off the bench to deliver an RBI single.

The Rams banged out four hits in the second inning of Game 2 and never looked back. Cornell added solo runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth to hold off Monmouth's single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh.
