Scots all but in MWC Tournament with sweep of Grinnell

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Monmouth all but punched their ticket to the Midwest Conference Tournament with an 18-0, 16-4 sweep of Grinnell Saturday afternoon.

The Scots need Lake Forest to at least split with winless Grinnell Sunday afternoon to return to the postseason after a one year hiatus. Lake Forest helped Monmouth by splitting with Cornell Saturday to tie the Rams and Scots for second with 7-3 league marks. Monmouth holds the tie-breaker over Cornell from this month's MWC Classic games.

The Scots came out with a vengeance in Game 1 against Grinnell, scoring 11 runs in the first inning. Caitlin Lingle supplied the big blow, a three-run homer as the Scots sent 15 batters to the plate in the inning. Alyssa Edler picked up her team-best seventh win, surrendering one hit over four innings while striking out six.

Monmouth scored early and often in Game 2, plating eight first inning runs on seven hits. Getting her first start behind the plate this season, freshman catcher Morgan Throop slugged a pair of doubles while scoring three times in a 2-for-3 game with two RBIs. Jalynne Young worked into the fifth to earn the win.

The Scots banged out 33 hits in the twinbill.
