Box Score 2 Taylor Smith's first homerun of her career powered Monmouth to an 11-2, 11-7 sweep of Illinois College to keep the Scots in the race for a Midwest Conference Tournament berth with two games to go.
Smith's three-run blast in the second inning of Game 1 was all the support Alyssa Edler would need to pick up the complete game win, her sixth win of the season. Monmouth piled on four more runs in the fifth and added another three in the seventh when Maggie Hayes hit the Scots' second three-run homer of the game. Edler scattered seven hits while striking out five.
Erin Kennelly came from the bullpen in Game 2 to thwart the Lady Blues who jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first two innings. Monmouth came back with two runs in each the the next four innings to pull out the come-from-behind win. Kaitlyn Winkler carried the big stick for the Scots in the nightcap, driving in three runs while going 4-for-5 at the plate.
The sweep moved the Scots to 18-14 on the season and 10-3 in league play, one point behind Cornell. Both teams have one doubleheader left in the conference season.
