Softball drops Midwest Conference opener to Lake Forest

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Fighting Scots dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Lake Forest to open Midwest Conference play Sunday at home. The Foresters held on for a 7-6 win in the first contest and cruised to an 8-0 win in the second game.
 
In the first game, Lake Forest plated 2 runs in the top of the 3rd inning but the Scots answered back with 3 of their own thanks to a wild pitch that scored Kelsey Barnes, an RBI single by Sommer Foster that also scored Morgan Throop after the Foresters threw the ball away.
 
The Scots gave up one run in the 4th and 4 in the fifth before the offense got going again. Emily Watkins singled home Foster and Maggie Hayes and later scored on an error to cut the margin 7-6 in favor of the visiting team.
 
The Scots loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the 7th but were unable to plate the tying run, resulting in their first conference loss of the season.
 
In the second game, the Foresters only allowed two Scot hits over five innings and banged out 10 in their own, scoring their 8 runs in the first three innings.
 
Skyler Johnson took the loss but struck out five Foresters. Caitlin Lingle and Kaitlyn Winkler collected to the hits for the Scots.
 
The two losses dropped Monmouth to an 8-9 record overall and 0-2 in MWC play. They host conference foe Cornell next Saturday for a doubleheader at 1pm.
