Softball posts pair of wins after rain delay, 7th inning heroics

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Monmouth fought through a 2 hour rain delay in one game and scored in their last at-bat to post a pair of wins Wednesday in Clermont, Fla.

The Scots scored three times following a rain delay against Rensselaer Polytechnical Insitute en route to a 4-1 win. Emily Watkins reached on an error, then took second on a wild pitch and stole third before the rain came in the second inning. When play resumed, Kaitlyn Winkler drew a walk and Maggie Hayes reached on a bunt single to load the bases for Kelsey Barnes. Barnes delivered a bases clearing double for the all the runs Skyler Johnson would need for the complete game victory.

A 4-3 win in the late game over the Coast Guard Academy was a bit more dramatic. The Scots took the lead in a pitchers' duel with a pair of runs in the fifth, but the game came down to the seventh. Trailing 2-0, Coast Guard took advantage of four straight hits and a pair of wild pitches to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the inning. Monmouth countered in their half of the frame when Winkler reached on a fielder's choice and Hayes doubled. Sophomore Kristen Dillon then collected her second RBI of the game, driving in Winkler to knot the game at 3-3. A walk to Morgan Martindale with one out brought Kirstyn Ozga to the plate. The freshman milked the bases loaded walk to give the Scots the 4-3 win to move to 6-1 on the season.
