Softball reaches milestones in split with IC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Monmouth reached two milestones in a doubleheader split with Illinois College.

Head coach John Goddard recorded his 95th career win in a Game 1 6-2 win over IC, making him the winningest coach in Monmouth softball history. Despite Sommer Foster blasting a solo homer to center in Game 2 for the team’s record 17th round tripper this season, the Scots fell in the nightcap 7-4.

The Scots cut loose for four runs in the bottom of the second in the opener to give Alyssa Edler her sixth win against just one loss. After the Lady Blues’ Brittany Fanella’s two-run homer gave IC the lead in the top of the second, the Scots rallied and parlayed three hits and a pair of walks to take a 5-2 lead. Edler then retired the next nine batters she faced on her way to the complete game victory.

After Foster’s leadoff homer in Game 2, the Scots found the runs tough to come by. The junior slugger gave Monmouth a 2-1 lead, driving in Kelsey Barnes in the second inning after Barnes and Foster collected back-to-back singles. IC retook the lead in the with a pair of unearned runs in the fourth before Courtney Bennett opened the Scots’ half of the inning with a triple. She then scored on Emily Woods’ sac fly to knot the game at 3-3. Bennett then gave MC the lead in the fifth, driving in Emily Watkins who had opened the inning with a double. IC then countered and took the lead for good with a three-run homer in the sixth off the bat of Paige Cullison.
