Softball slips out of first in the MWC South Division after sweep by Lake Forest

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Monmouth slipped into second place in the Midwest Conference South Division after dropping a doubleheader at Lake Forest 7-5 and 5-3.

Caitlin Lingle closed in on the career home run record, blasting the 14th round tripper of her career to move to within three of the all-time lead with a solo shot in the second inning of Game 1 to give the Scots a quick 1-0 lead. The Foresters answered with two second inning runs, a four-run third and another tally in the fifth to open up a 7-1 lead. The Scots rallied with four in the seventh as Kaitlyn Winkler hit her first homer of the season – a two-run shot – before the Scots’ rally fell short.

Monmouth fell behind 3-0 early in the nightcap, but scratched out a run in the fifth when Skyler Johnson’s base hit drove in Sam Sons. An Emily Watkins’ leadoff homer in the sixth cut Monmouth’s deficit to 5-2. The Scots cut it to 5-3 in the seventh when Sons led off the inning with a double and scored on a double play. With two outs and a runner on first, the Foresters ended the threat by inducing a game-ending ground out.
