Late heroics gives softball another split at Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Monmouth split their Day 2 games at the Midwest Conference Classic at East Peoria, Ill., Saturday, dropping a 4-1 contest to St. Norbert before pulling out a seventh-inning 2-1 win over Ripon in their nightcap.

Monmouth was held to just three hits against St. Norbert which jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to a three-run third. The Green Knights touched starter Skyler Johnson for five hits in the inning. The Scots tallied their lone run thanks to a St. Norbert error in the sixth after Sam Sons had singled. She then stole second and later scored after Courtney Bennett collected the Scots’ third hit of the game.

Alyssa Edler pitched seven strong innings in the Scots’ 2-1 win over Ripon as Sommer Foster drove in the winning run with her first hit of the game in the bottom of the seventh. Sons – who went 3-for-5 on the day – gave Monmouth their first scoring chance, leading off the third with a double. A Ripon error on Edler’s batted ball allowed Sons to race home for a 1-0 lead. Ripon responded with a solo homer in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 1-1.

That’s where it stayed until the bottom of the seventh when Kaitlyn Winkler milked a leadoff walk to get the ball rolling. With one out, Sons spanked her second hit of the game to right, sending pinch-runner Kristen Dillon to third. After a Son’s steal of second, Edler drew an intentional walk to load the bases, allowing Foster to deliver the winning blow.
