Softball Scots homer twice, but can't overcome No. 3 ranked IWU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Monmouth blasted a pair of home runs, but couldn’t knock off the No. 3 team in the nation, falling to Illinois Wesleyan 3-2 and 3-0.

Sommer Foster opened Game 1 with a leadoff homer to give the Fighting Scots a quick 1-0 lead. Alyssa Edler then sat the Titans down in order in the bottom of the first before surrendering three runs in the second. A walk was sandwiched between a pair of hits to set up IWU’s big inning. Monmouth mounted a threat in the fifth when Kaitlyn Winkler and Kelsey Barnes reached on back-to-back hits with one out, but were stranded on a strikeout and ground out. Emily Watkins’ one-out homer in the sixth trimmed the Monmouth deficit to 3-2, but that would be as close as the Scots would get in the opener.

Skyler Johnson kept Illinois Wesleyan in check in Game 2 before the Titans got on the boards with a pair of runs in the fourth. A leadoff homer turned out to be the only run the Titans would need. Monmouth banged out six hits in the game, but left 10 runners on base to saddle Johnson with the loss.
