Softball goes extra innings, split Wednesday games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Monmouth just missed sweeping their Wednesday games at Clermont, Fla., falling 7-5 in eight innings to Heidelberg in the opener and then edging Mahattanville in the second game 4-1.

The Scots spotted Heidelberg a 5-0 lead before getting their bats going. Emily Watkins' double drove in Sommer Foster in the bottom of the third to break the drought. Monmouth then scored four unearned runs in the fifth to knot the game.

Knotted at 5-5 heading into extra innings, the Scots surrendered two runs in the top of the eighth with two outs and then failed to score in their half of the inning.

It looked like Monmouth and Mahattanville might go extra inning in the Scots' second game after both teams drove a run home in the first. Neither team mounted a threat until the Scots' Caitlin Lingle doubled in the sixth and then came home on Charlotte Park's sac fly. Monmouth added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh.

Mahattanville threatened in the bottom of the frame loading the bases with two outs. The game ended when Alyssa Edler fanned the last batter for her second win of the spring.
