Men's Water Polo fights to the finish at Division Championships

The seeds held true at the South Division Water Polo Championships hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., as Monmouth College finished 10th.

The Fighting Scots opened with a rematch Friday against nationally ranked Washington and Jefferson. After a season opening 18-10 loss to W&J in September, Monmouth closed the gap two months later, but fell 11-7 in the opening round.

Josh Dunn's Scots were slight favorites in the tourney's second round, a rematch with Salem International. Monmouth had defeated Salem in overtime in September just a few hours after dropping their inaugural match to Washington and Jefferson. After being held scoreless in the first quarter Saturday, the Scots found themselves trailing 8-5 at halftime. Monmouth's offense and defense picked up in the second half en route a 14-13 win over Salem. Raheem Brown's seventh goal of the game with 4:35 left gave the Scots a 14-12 cushion and the defense was able to hang on, allowing just a single goal in the final three minutes.

Saturday's win set up another rematch for Sunday, this time with Notre Dame College in the battle for ninth place. The Scots had fallen to NDC on their opening weekend, 22-9, but played a much closer match two weeks ago in an 18-14 loss.

Monmouth's steady improvement hit a roadblock on Sunday against the ninth-seeds as NDC outgunned the Scots 27-14.

A quick start stalled out as the Scots had jumped on top quickly behind four Brown goals to give the Scots a 4-1 first quarter lead. His 11 goal game wasn't quite enough to shut down Notre Dame College which led 13-7 at the half.

Monmouth wrapped up their inaugural season posting a 5-9 record, finishing 10th in the South Division Championships. Only the top six teams from the tournament are invited to the CWPA Eastern Championships to be held in Rhode Island Nov. 22-24.
