The Monmouth College men's water polo team is gaining experience, strength and another win last weekend in a trip to Erie, Pa.
The Fighting Scots opened the weekend facing Gannon University on Saturday. After falling behind 5-2 in the first quarter, the Scots played nearly even in the second half before falling 22-14 despite a five goal effort from Raheem Brown.
Monmouth got back in the win column, posting a 12-9 win over Penn State-Behrend in the day's second game. The Scots had to fight back from a 5-3 halftime deficit to pick up their fourth win of the year.
Brown scored 10 goals on Sunday – five in each of the day's two games – but it wasn't quite enough to win a pair of close matches. Mercyhurst - the CWPA Division II Eastern Champions - jumped out to an 8-4 first quarter lead in the opener and went on to hand the Scots an 18-12 defeat.
Nearly a month after dropping a 22-9 decision to Notre Dame College, the Scots were much closer in the rematch. With neither team able to gain much of a cushion, NDC outscored Monmouth 6-4 in the fourth quarter to edge the Scots 18-14.
The Scots will next travel to Annapolis, Md., for the Southern Division Championships Nov. 9-10.
