A pair of Monmouth College players were named to the CWPA Division III Water Polo All-Tournament Team after guiding the Scots to back-to-back wins at the tournament hosted by Johns Hopkins University.
Senior Tony Marino (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) and sophomore Raheem Brown (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Kentwood) were named to the second team at the conclusion of play Sunday afternoon. The pair combined to score 24 of the Scots' 58 goals in the four matches.
Brown got off to a good start on Saturday, scoring a game-high eight goals against Johns Hopkins – ranked No. 3 in Division III and No. 5 in the nation. His four-goal outburst in the fourth quarter sparked a Monmouth rally which fell just short in a 20-13 opening round loss.
Marino and Brown each scored a hat trick as did Gabe Baginski in Monmouth's second match Saturday, a 16-14 loss to fourth-seeded Connecticut College. Monmouth held a 9-8 lead at the half, but Conn College's fourth-quarter rally gave the fifth-seeded Scots their second loss at the tournament.
Monmouth rolled to a 17-11 win against Penn State-Behrend in their final match Saturday evening. Neal Hosper's game-high five goals and Kameron Simmones-Gil's three helped to give the Scots their first win at the tournament and their second overall.
Simmones-Gil's five-goals in Sunday's fifth-place game paced the Scots to a 14-11 win in the rematch with Penn State-Behrend. Monmouth led 6-4 at the half and upped the lead to 11-7 entering the final quarter. The win gave the Scots their first back-to-back wins in the history of the program.
Monmouth will enter this weekend's trip to Erie, Pa., with a two-game win streak.
