Polo ends Day 1 with win over Pennn State-Behrend

Monmouth got off to a slow start, but ended Saturday's play at the CWPA Eastern Division Tournament hosted by Johns Hopkins with a 1-2 record.

Monmouth got in an early hole to Johns Hopkins in the opener despite a game-high eight goals by Raheem Brown. The Fighting Scots – seeded fifth in the tournament – played nearly even with the third-ranked team in the nation after the first quarter. JHU scored nine times in the opening frame to take a 9-1 lead. The two teams traded scores in the second period before Johns Hopkins inched ahead in the third quarter to lead 19-8. A furious five goal rally fell short in the final frame.

In the day's second match, the Scots saw a 9-8 halftime lead over fourth-seeded Connecticut College slip into a 16-14 loss. Brown's three-goal second quarter outburst staked Monmouth to the lead, but a fourth-quarter rally by Conn College gave the Scots their second loss of the tournament.

The Scots ended the opening day with a 17-11 win over Penn State-Behrend. The two teams will match up again Sunday morning.
