LEGENDARY COACH, TWO RECORD-SETTING STUDENT ATHLETES TO BE INDUCTED INTO HALL OF FAME

Two record-setting student-athletes and one legendary coach will be inducted into the Monmouth College M Club Hall of Fame Saturday as part of the college's Homecoming weekend festivities.

Legendary basketball and baseball coach Dr. Terry Glasgow, who recorded over 800 combined victories, softball strikeout ace Shelly Orwig Mabee '03 and two-sport star Amy Horneck Jewett '06 comprise the 33rd class to be inducted into the college's athletic Hall of Fame. The 8:30 a.m. ceremony on Oct. 1 will be held on the main concourse of the Huff Athletic Center. The inductees will then be recognized during pregame festivities before the Scots' football team hosts Cornell College in a 1 p.m. kickoff at April Zorn Memorial Stadium.

Dr. Terry Glasgow (Monmouth, Ill., formerly of Keokuk, Iowa)

For parts of four decades, Dr. Terry Glasgow was the driving force of Fighting Scots athletics, leading Monmouth to Midwest Conference championships in basketball and baseball.

In all, Glasgow coached 812 Monmouth victories – a record 469 in basketball and 343 in baseball – and led teams to 13 MWC titles, including nine in baseball. He went on an especially strong run starting in the late 1980s, taking teams to three consecutive NCAA basketball tournaments (1988-90) and sporting an 89-15 baseball record from 1989-92.

Glasgow coached basketball long enough – 35 years – that his career spanned from the old Waid Gymnasium to the Huff Athletic Center. He retired as one of Division III's top 25 winningest coaches. His 21 years in the dugout ended before the Scots played at Peacock Park, but his impact was felt there, too: the ballpark is named Glasgow Field. As Monmouth's longest-serving athletic director (1978-2008), "TG" was instrumental in developing all of the college's modern athletic facilities.

Shelly Orwig Mabee '03 (Cedarburg, Wis., formerly of Wyoming, Ill.)

The Monmouth College softball team enjoyed a resurgence around the time of Y2K, and when the Fighting Scots needed a big victory in those years, Shelly Orwig was sent to the pitching circle.

The Scots reached the Midwest Conference playoffs all four years of Orwig's career, winning six postseason games in that span. Orwig posted the "W" four times, including a first-round shutout as a freshman and a 3-1 victory over St. Norbert her senior year to put Monmouth in the title round for the second consecutive season.

The Scots equaled or surpassed their previous season record for wins (19) in all four of Orwig's campaigns, peaking with a 22-14 mark her senior year.

A three-time All-MWC pick, Orwig's career totals included 39 wins, 13 shutouts, 358 strikeouts and 86 games, all Monmouth records at the time of her induction. Her 69 starts, 52 complete games and 444 innings pitched were all No. 2 on the list.

Amy Horneck Jewett '06 (Hermiston, Ore.)

The season before Amy Horneck joined Monmouth's women's soccer program, the Fighting Scots didn't win a game. By the time her career ended, the Scots posted a then-record 11 victories in 2005 and made their first-ever Midwest Conference playoff appearance.

Horneck contributed mightily to the Scots' surge, earning first team All-MWC honors each of her four seasons by scoring 18, 13, 15 and 20 goals, respectively. That totaled a school-record 66, more than doubling the previous mark, and she also set the career assists record (31).

As a junior, Horneck was voted one of the conference's co-Offensive MVPs. As a senior, her two goals in a 2-0 win over perennial power Lake Forest helped secure the historic playoff berth, and she was a second team academic All-American.

A speedster on the soccer pitch with a booming shot with either foot, Horneck's athleticism was also on display in track, where she was a two-time MWC triple jump champion.
