Monmouth's women's water polo team continued their assault on the program's record book with improved play and a pair of wins at last weekend's tournament at Carthage College.
The Scots pulled away in the second half of a 13-9 win over Penn State-Behrend in their opening match Friday afternoon. Leading 7-6 entering the third quarter, the Scots scored three unanswered goals when
Rachel Unger notched her first tally to begin the surge.
Cassidy O'Connell added another goal on her way to a team-high six scores and
Brenna Bowers added the third goal of the run to push the Scots to a 10-5 lead. The teams then traded goals over the final eight minutes.
Grove City used their speed to offset Monmouth in the second game on Friday, hanging a 14-7 loss on the Scots. Monmouth's defense held the Wolverines to just two goals in the first quarter, but found themselves trialing 2-0 after one. Monmouth's offense gained traction in the second quarter, and after Grove City had taken a 4-1 lead, cut the margin to one at 4-3 on goals from O'Connell and Unger. That would be as close as the Scots would get despite a 14-save effort in goal fromÂ
Natalie Curtis.
Monmouth rebounded nicely on Saturday with one stellar defensive effort and one dominating win.
The Scots opened play with Washington and Jefferson – ranked ninth in all of NCAA Division III – and used a stingy defense to forge a 4-4 tie through the first three quarters. Monmouth had opened up a 4-2 lead on the Presidents with second quarter goals from O'Connell and
Carlyn Clarke. The Scots got a record-setting 19 saves from Curtis, but W&J eased ahead with four unanswered scores in the final period to edge the Scots 9-4.
The defense was again stingy in the nightcap, a 9-6 win over Utica. Second quarter scores from
Becca Dabrowski and O'Connell put Monmouth up 5-3 entering halftime as the Scots never trailed. The Pioneers briefly knotted the game at 5-5 midway through the third period before another O'Connell score on her way to a seven-goal effort gave the Scots the lead for good.
Defending champion Connecticut College raced out to an early lead in the Sunday finale, a 10-5 Scots' loss. Monmouth played nearly even with the Camels in the second half, outscoring Connecticut 4-2 on a pair of goals each from Dabrowski and O'Connell.
The Scots will be back in action April 1-2 at the Penn State-Behrend Tournament where they'll enter with a 4-6 record, the best mark in the young program's history. Â
