The Monmouth College women's basketball team started their season with a 94-47 home loss to Augustana on Saturday. The Fighting Scots will play their next three games on the road before hosting Coe on Nov. 22.
Augustana sprinted out to an 8-0 lead before freshman
Ava Pelaez (Aurora, Colorado) scored her first college basket with 6:54 to play in the opening quarter.
Averi Rangel (Moline, Illinois) hit a 3-pointer but the Vikings scored the next 10 points to lead 18-5. Junior College transfer
Jamaica Walker (Mobile, Alabama) scored the final four Monmouth points of the quarter with a bucket and two free throws.
Leading 28-9 to start the second quarter, Augustana went on a 6-0 run before
Kamryn Gillespie (Westmont, Illinois) hit a 3-pointer for her first collegiate points. The Vikings went on a 21-0 run as the Scots went more than five minutes without scoring. Down 55-12, transfer
Hannah Peel (Gladwin, Michigan) scored her first Monmouth basket. The Vikings hit a 3-pointer to end the half with a 58-14 lead.

Kynlee Stearns (Gilson, Illinois) scored for the Scots. Pelaez scored and
Kiersten Cox (Illinois City, Illinois) made a free throw. Cox followed with a 3-pointer and Pelaez scored five straight points. Augustana pushed the lead to 75-29 before
Brooklyn Sellers (Freeport, Illinois) made a pair of free throws to end the quarter.
The Vikings scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to lead 80-31. Stearns and Rangel hit consecutive buckets before the Vikings buried a 3-pointer. Stearns made a free throw to cut the Augie lead to 83-36 with 5:00 to play. Stearns made two more free throws and a 3-pointer for an 88-41 score. Rangel hit a jumper and
Layla Rice (Rock Island, Illinois) made a free throw for her first college point. The Vikings hit their 12th 3-pointer of the game for a 91-46 lead with just over one minute to play. Pelaez made a free throw to get into double digits.
Pelaez and Stearns led the Scots with 10 points each while Rangel added nine. Sellers had eight rebounds and five different Scots had one assist each.
Allie Hoy (Woodland, Illinois) led the Scots with two steals while Rice and Sellers each had a block.
MONMOUTH MOMENTS: Pelaez, Walker, Gillespie, Peel, Rice and
