Bill Lafferty came to Monmouth College after a distinguished track career at Dixon High School, where he was a district champion. He ran on the 1954 Midwest Conference champion track team and was a four-year runner-up for the Jud Kruidenier Trophy.
“Bill Lafferty and Dick Vogt comprise the greatest one-two punch in Monmouth College track history,” said his coach, the legendary Glenn “Jelly” Robinson.
After graduating, Lafferty continued his track career in the U.S. Army, where he was captain of the First Cavalry Division Artillery Track Team. Also an accomplished marksman, as a member of the Illinois National Guard, he served as an instructor and received numerous state and national awards for marksmanship.
Lafferty eventually returned home to Dixon High School. As a teacher and a coach there, he encouraged many students and athletes to attend Monmouth College.
