The Monmouth College softball team enjoyed a resurgence around the time of Y2K, and when the Fighting Scots needed a big victory in those years, Shelly Orwig was sent to the pitching circle.
The Scots reached the Midwest Conference playoffs all four years of Orwig’s career, winning six postseason games in that span. Orwig posted the “W” four times, including a first-round shutout as a freshman and a 3-1 victory over St. Norbert her senior year to put Monmouth in the title round for the second consecutive season.
The Scots equaled or surpassed their previous season record for wins (19) in all four of Orwig’s campaigns, peaking with a 22-14 mark her senior year.
A three-time All-MWC pick, Orwig’s career totals included 39 wins, 13 shutouts, 358 strikeouts and 86 games, all Monmouth records at the time of her induction. Her 69 starts, 52 complete games and 444 innings pitched were all No. 2 on the list.
