Ron Smith did not begin his college career at Monmouth, nor did his athletic career end when he played his final game as a Fighting Scot. Smith excelled in his two years at MC after transferring from the University of New Orleans, then had a successful coaching career, including an Illinois state baseball title at Olympia High School in 2002.
As a player at MC, Smith quarterbacked the Scots to a 13-3-1 record in two seasons. He had 77 completions for 1,002 yards and 13 TDs and made 50-of-55 PATs and 7-of-10 field goals.
Football was not even Smith’s best sport. On the baseball diamond, the first baseman hit .357 with seven homers and 35 RBI in 45 games, leading the Scots to two Midwest Conference championships. Following graduation, Smith was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers.
