John Bingaman was one of the best linemen to ever play football at Monmouth College. He was honorable mention All-Midwest Conference in 1960, and the following year, he was named to the All-MWC first team at both center and linebacker, averaging 16 solo tackles per game. He was also named to the all-state squad, and capped his honors with his selection to the Little All-American football team. Fate was not as kind to Bingman the following year as he went down with a season-ending injury in the first quarter of Monmouth’s first contest.
Bingaman served in the Marine Corps from 1966-69, attaining the rank of captain. An artillery forward observer and battery commander, he was action in Hue during the Tet Offensive in 1968. “I always seemed to be in the hot spots,” he commented, an observation that applied equally well to football.
