Michael Castillo was a three-time Midwest Conference wrestling champion at 126 and 134 pounds. An honorable mention All-American, Castillo placed among the top 10 wrestlers in his weight class in the nation in 1973 and posted a career record of 93-3-3.
He was also featured in Sports Illustrated, which presented him with a gold cup to honor his achievements in wrestling. While at Monmouth, Castillo set new school wrestling records for most wins and most takedowns. He was a four-time NCAA tournament qualifier.
A determined competitor, Castillo once suffered broken ribs in the first period of a match, yet continued to wrestle and came back to pin his opponent in the second period.
Castillo also earned one varsity letter in cross country and one in football. He played defensive back for Monmouth’s undefeated 1972 football squad.
