Rushing for 1,000 yards in a season is a major milestone for a college running back. Only one player in Monmouth history has ever done it multiple times. Kevin Matarelli came within seven yards of being the second member of that very exclusive club.
A three-time first team All-Midwest Conference selection, Matarelli gained 1,175 yards as a junior in 1993. The following year, he was stopped just short of repeating the milestone, gaining 993 yards to finish his career with 3,118 yards on 542 carries. Both marks were second-best all-time through the 1994 season, as was his average of 5.8 yards per carry.
Matarelli reached the end zone 26 times and scored 160 career points, MC’s fourth-highest total at the time. Also a kick returner, the Peoria High School product, who also attended Peoria Notre Dame, totaled 3,851 all-purpose yards, which was ranked fifth in school history at the time of his induction.
