Frank “Pop” Gorom was part of a contingent of players recruited to Monmouth by Howard “Bill” Reed ’20, who was their high school coach at Loveland, Colo.
Gorom made an immediate impact his freshman year as a hard-hitting fullback, but it was during his junior and senior years that he really shined. Running interference for such greats as Warren Taylor and Keith Molesworth, he was named to the all-state team in 1925 and was considered by many the best fullback in the state. That squad, known as the “Trick-A-Minute Machine,” went undefeated and allowed only two touchdowns all season. The 1926 team suffered one defeat but outscored its opponents 151-22. Against Knox, Gorom rushed for 98 yards, considered at the time to be quite a feat. Following the season, he was named to the all-conference first team and the all-state second team.
