Dr. James W. Marshall distinguished himself as one of the most outstanding supporters of Monmouth College, personifying the spirit of sacrifice and duty in a half-century of service to his alma mater.
As an undergraduate, he competed as a diver and swimmer for head coach Bobby Woll and as a long jumper and sprinter for head track coach Herb Hart.
Marshall went on to graduate from the University of Illinois Medical School in 1941 and opened a private practice in Monmouth in 1946. Two years later, he became the college’s physician. He quietly became one of the most recognizable persons at Monmouth football games, sacrificing innumerable Saturday afternoons to root for the Fighting Scots and also tend to the injured of both Monmouth and its opponents.
Marshall served on college’s Senate from 1963-87. He received MC’s Distinguished Service Award in 1977. The trainer's room in Huff Athletic Center is named in his honor.
