Most outstanding quarterbacks are athletic and intelligent, and that description fits Dale Brooks, who led the Fighting Scots to an 8-1 record his senior season. A starting safety, Brooks came on to play quarterback extensively in the second half of his junior season, engineering a late drive to defeat Cornell 6-0. In 1971, the quarterback spot was all his, and Brooks completed 59 passes for 859 yards and seven TDs. He added 370 yards rushing and was named second-team All-Midwest Conference. He was honored following the season as the team’s McClintock Award winner. More honors awaited Brooks after he completed his baseball career the following spring. He received his second straight All-MWC baseball selection, and he earned a postgraduate scholarship from the NCAA. Brooks posted a 7-3 record with an ERA of 2.66 as a junior and followed that up with a 4-2 campaign in 1972.
