There’s little argument that Chris Wheat is the greatest hitter in the long history of Monmouth College baseball. That’s because he’s very close to being the best hitter in Division III history as well. At the time of his induction, Wheat’s school-record .474 batting average was third all-time among small college programs. It was a national record for several years before being broken in 1997.

Some of Wheat’s other career records as a Scot may never be topped, including runs (140), slugging percentage (.798), on-base percentage (.566) and RBI (110). He owns the top two single-season batting averages, hitting .522 as a sophomore and .506 the next year. The three-time all-conference infielder belted 17 homers and led the Scots to three MWC titles and a four-year record of 83-19, including 46-5 his final two seasons. Wheat was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers as a 25th-round selection in 1990.
