Through his first 3-1/2 years, Charles Burton was a special student-athlete, starring in track and serving as Student Association president. In his final semester in 1992, Burton ascended to a new level. He placed fourth in the 400-meter dash and fifth in the 55-meter hurdles at the national indoor meet his senior year, just a week after winning six events at the Midwest Conference meet. Outdoors, he set the school record of 10.73 seconds in the 100-meter dash and then ran to three first-place finishes at the league meet, stretching his total of MWC titles to 29.
The final meet of Burton’s career proved to be his most memorable, as he won a national championship in the 400-meter hurdles. He added fifth-place finishes in the 110-meter hurdles and the 4x400 relay, lifting the Scots to 30 points, good for seventh in the nation.
