A graduate of the University of Iowa, where he played quarterback under coach Forest Evashevski, he had his Hawkeye career interrupted by a three-year tour of duty as an Army paratrooper during the Korean Conflict.
Initially hired at Monmouth as head wrestling coach in 1965, he took on head football coaching duties his second year, beginning a 13-year dynasty, which included a record of 79-31-2, three Midwest Conference championships and one undefeated season.
Additionally, Reichow coached many successful wrestling and golf teams, and his golfers won four MWC titles in a five-year span. On the gridiron, it was said that “he made average players perform above their ability … He expected every player to trim his locks to equal his own bristly burr-cut … while this drove away a few players in anger, it attracted so many others that it was difficult to suit them up.”
